Celebrated since 1949 each May, Mental Health Awareness Month seeks to increase awareness of the issue of and educate people about mental health conditions. It also aims to make others aware of the realities of people who are suffering from mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, and bipolar disease. Another purpose of the initiative is to remove the stigma associated with mental health disorders. Part of the effort also includes offering psychiatric evaluation services. Through the use of the green ribbon, the goal is to create a world where everyone genuinely cares about mental health conditions and the effects on those who struggle with them.
Preparing for Mental Health Awareness Month
In preparation for Mental Health Awareness Month, Mental Health America, the leading organization of the initiative releases a toolkit each March with information, factsheets, and articles related to that year’s theme. In 2019, the theme is a continuation of the previous year’s theme, mind, and body. Some of the items in the toolkit include:
- Press releases
- Fact sheets about Animal Companionship, Work-Life Balance, Spirituality and Religion, Humor, and Social Connections and Recreation
- Key Messages
The toolkit also includes buttons for a call to action, outreach ideas, and additional resources. As the month gets underway, organizations offer a variety of awareness activities to educate the public and the media. During the month, strategies for achieving mental health and wellness are also shared. There are also events such as community walks and screening as well as fundraising and advocating.
Benefits of Mental Health Treatment
There are many benefits to seeking treatment for mental health issues. These include repairing damaged interpersonal relationships as well as experiencing an increase in joy and fulfillment. Getting the necessary treatment can also result in a more stable daily living, including improved work and financial situation. Your physical health can also improve if you seek treatment for mental health issues. Mental Health Awareness Month attempts to spread these ideas to encourage people suffering from mental health issues to seek treatment.
